What Is Yeast Infection?
A vaginal yeast infection (vaginal candidiasis) is caused by an overgrowth of a fungus that naturally lives in your vagina, called Candida albicans. This overgrowth triggers irritation, inflammation, itching, and painful discharge. Most women experience a yeast infection sometime during their lifetime.
If this is your first time experiencing the symptoms of a yeast infection, you should visit a gynecologist to verify that you have a yeast infection.
But if you have recurring yeast infections, or if you just don’t want to go the prescription route with an antifungal cream, there are other ways to try to treat a yeast infection

Also, it is capable of influencing your vaginal area; nevertheless, it can grow around your dentures, under your breasts, beneath your skin folds, you lower abdomen as well as your nail beds.
Besides that, pregnancy, diabetes, steroids, stress, use of oral contraceptives, antibiotics, together with chronic health conditions also cause the yeast infection.
What Are The Yeast Infection Symptoms?
To know whether you are suffering from the yeast infection or not, you have to observe these symptoms which are mentioned below:
– Vaginal itching
– Pain during sex
– Swelling around your vagina
– Burning during sex or urination
Natural remedies for yeast infection
Some of these remedies use ingredients that you might already have in your home. Their effectiveness varies, and evidence for their success is mostly anecdotal. Keep reading to find out about some popular home remedies for yeast infections.
A review of research published in the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy found that some probiotics can be effective against C. albicans.
Yogurt can be considered a probiotic because it contains live bacteria, such as Lactobacillus acidophilus. These bacteria are essential to creating a healthy environment in your vagina. They can help treat an overgrowth caused by an imbalance.
Plain Greek yogurt is the best kind to use for this home remedy. Make sure that the yogurt doesn’t contain added sugar, which fuels the growth of the Candida fungus.
Firstly, take a plastic tampon and dip it into plain yogurt.
– Then put it in the freezer to make yogurt become little sickles.
– Next, apply these sickles on the yeast infection area
– After that, rub it
– Finally, remove the sickles
– Repeat this method more than twice per day to get quick relief.
Boric acid is a potent antiseptic that some women claim is used for treating yeast infections that are resistant to other remedies. According to a 2009 study, topical boric acid showed encouraging results as a treatment for vaginal infections. Some health websites claim boric acid vaginal suppositories may also be useful in treating vaginal yeast infections.
Boric acid is toxic in large amounts. It can lead to kidney damage, acute failure of the circulatory system, or death if you absorb enough of it. To avoid this, don’t use boric acid on broken skin and don’t take it orally. If you’re pregnant, you should not use boric acid in any form.
Always mix boric acid with water before applying it to your vagina or vulva area
Firstly, take a little boric acid and dilute it with water
– Then implement this solution in your affected area
– Next, allow it to sit for some minutes
– Finally, use water to wash your skin off
– Keep doing this method once a day daily. You may see the result in only two weeks.
Essential oil of Oregano:
Common oregano, or Origanum marjoram, is what you usually find in your grocery store’s spice section. The oil of oregano used to treat yeast infections isn’t the same type, however. Look for oil of oregano made from wild oregano, or Origanum vulgare, like the one seen here. It contains thymol and carvacrol, which are potent antifungals.
A study published in the journal Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry found that wild oregano oil could stop or slow the growth of C. albicans, depending on the dosage used.
Oil of oregano is a natural blood thinner, so don’t use it if you take blood thinners for another health condition. Also don’t use it if you have blood-clotting issues, such as from a vitamin K deficiency.
Essential oils should not be taken orally. They are meant to be inhaled as part of aromatherapy. While some studies are examining other ways to use oregano essential oils, at this time it’s recommended that you use it diluted in a carrier oil, such as olive or sweet almond oil. Mix three to five drops essential oil per ounce of carrier oil. Then, apply it to the skin in massage or inhale it through a diffuser. Do not use essential oils near your vagina.
Probiotic suppositories and supplements
Probiotics help restore the bacteria-yeast balance throughout your body. If you start a regimen of oral probiotics that contain strains of the Lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria, you can bring your digestive tract and vaginal flora back into alignment.
Oral supplements take about ten days to reach full effect, so some women use probiotics as vaginal suppositories to see results more quickly. Probiotic suppositories have also been shown to be useful for treating vaginosis, according to Harvard Health.
Coconut oil is a fatty oil derived from the flesh of the coconut. The oil has many health benefits, including antifungal properties. Studies have shown that coconut oil is effective against C. albicans, making this home remedy one of the few with substantial evidence that it works.
To treat a vaginal yeast infection using coconut oil, be sure to buy pure, organic coconut oil. You can apply the oil directly to the affected area.
Firstly, wash the yeast infection area and then dry it. If this field is so sensitive, you can use your hair dryer to wipe it.
– Then apply a slight layer of coconut oil in this area.
– Finally, leave it on until it dries
– Keep doing this process two or three times per day until your condition is better
Tea tree oil
Tea tree oil is an essential oil that’s used to kill fungi, bacteria, and viruses. Research shows that a vaginal suppository containing tea tree oil may help treat vaginal infections. Tea tree oil is also believed to help maintain a healthy balance of flora in the vagina.
Tea tree oil is incredibly powerful. Make sure to dilute it with a carrier oil such as jojoba or coconut oil if you’re going to use it as a vaginal suppository. Only use tea tree oil occasionally, and never swallow it.
Firstly, take a little tea tree oil
– Then dilute it with water. Sometimes you can use a teaspoon of almond oil or olive oil to weaken it so that you may get a better result.
– Next, apply this solution to your affected area
– Finally, allow it to sit until it completely dries
– Follow this method several times per day until you feel better.
In case you are suffering from vaginal yeast infection, you can also use tea tree oil, too. Here is the detailed instruction for you.
– Firstly, take enough amount of tea tree oil
– Then dip a tampon into it
– Next, put this into your vagina
– After that, leave it for up to 3 hours
– Finally, remove it out of your vagina
– Keep doing this method twice a day daily
Apple Cider Vinegar:
One popular yeast infection remedy is an apple cider vinegar bath. Vinegar has many medicinal uses, some more proven by research than others. When you add a half cup of apple cider vinegar to a warm bathtub and soak for 20 minutes, the acidic component of the vinegar is supposed to eliminate any harmful microorganisms.
A vinegar bath is not the same as vinegar douching, which aims to flush out all bacteria (good and bad) from your vagina. Doing so leaves you more prone to a recurrence of the yeast infection.
Firstly, take 2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar and a cup of water. You ought to use warm water.
– Then pour apple cider vinegar into the water
– Next, stir it well
– Finally, drink this solution twice per day.
– You may see the result after doing this method within a few days
Garlic was shown in a lab study to be an efficient Candida killer. But there is some debate over whether it will help cure yeast infections outside of a lab setting. If you’d like to try garlic to treat a yeast infection, add more garlic to your diet. Some websites recommend inserting garlic into the vagina, but burns and significant pain have been reported.
Firstly, take a few garlic cloves
– Then crush them until you get a paste.
– Next, apply it to your affected area
– Finally, remove garlic paste and wash off your skin after it dries.
– Repeat this remedy twice a day daily until you get the positive result.
For all the reasons above, garlic ought to be mentioned in the list of the effective home remedies for yeast infection.
Hydrogen peroxide is a bacteria and yeast-killing antiseptic, according to lab studies. While it won’t work on every species of yeast, some women swear by using hydrogen peroxide topically when they get a yeast infection. Make sure that you dilute hydrogen peroxide before applying it to your genitals, and don’t use it for more than five days in a row.
Vitamin C is an immune system booster. A healthy immune system allows your body to bring itself back into balance. Vitamin C (also called ascorbic acid) has antimicrobial components when it’s distilled into tablet form, so some women use it to kill candida overgrowths.
Like many other home remedies, using a vitamin C tablet suppository might burn the sensitive skin of your vagina. Instead, try increasing your intake of vitamin C to boost your body’s ability to beat the yeast infection.
Cranberries ought to be listed as well. Thanks to the antifungal and antibacterial properties which are present in cranberries, they are used to combat against the fungi that cause the yeast infection. Likewise, they are also used to cure urinary tract or the different types of the bladder infection.
Thus, if you don’t know how to treat yeast infection from insides, why don’t you drink cranberries juice every day? When you do that, the healing process will be speeded up, and the practical results can be seen in a short time.
However, in case you do not have enough time to make cranberry juice, you ought to take cranberry tablets which are sold at that natural health store. Also, before you take them, you had better ask the doctor for his or her advice.
I recently attended a nutrition class for pregnant women and learned that chamomile is very good at killing candida overgrowth! It is also super safe for pregnant women and has a calming effect as well. You can drink chamomile tea or even take chamomile supplements. You might want to start here before using the over the counter medication as well.
Olive Leaf Extract
Olive leaf extract possesses anti-fungal, anti-oxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is incredibly beneficial in treat yeast infection during pregnancy. This extract also helps restore the good bacteria in your body. All you need to do is mix some olive leaf extract with vodka and apply on the affected area. It is entirely safe to use in pregnancy and does not have any side effects.
Avoid Usage of Soaps
Soaps can infuriate yeasts and can cause full-blown infections. Soaps contain alcohol and toxic chemicals that can cause an imbalance in pH level of the vaginal region. This increases the chances of developing the yeast infection. Avoid using chemical soap products and switch to either organic or herbal soaps.
Wear Comfortable Underwear
The first and most important prerequisite is to wear loose and comfortable underwear. Tight underwear locks in moisture and does not allow it to escape. Yeast infection can worsen if your underwear is moist and warm. Always wear loose, comfortable, and cotton underwear so that it dries quickly and keeps the vaginal area dry and clean.
Drink Adequate Water
Water is essential for life, and so it is for pregnant women too. Pregnant women who have contracted yeast infection can benefit significantly from drinking large quantities of water. Drinking water often will make you urinate frequently, reduce pain, and flush out excess sugar. Water also helps eliminate toxins from the body.
Acidophilus is a good bacteria that usually resides in the gastrointestinal tract. This bacteria also plays an essential role in keeping yeast at controlled levels in the body. Acidophilus is also commonly found in many foods we consume. It is also available in a powder or capsule form to readily absorb.
Reduce Caffeine and Sugar
Sugar and caffeine are harmful ingredients when it comes to yeast infections as they support the growth of yeast in the vagina. Cutting down caffeine and sugary foods in meals can help control and treat yeast infections.
There are several over-the-counter drugs available to cure yeast infections. However, it is best advisable to consult a doctor before taking them. Above mentioned remedies are quick and straightforward hacks to treat yeast infection naturally without any side effects. These effective treatments are from cheap and already available natural ingredients at home. If the yeast infection persists despite trying out these remedies, you may be suffering from a chronic disease. In such cases, it is advisable to contact your doctor immediately. Follow these simple home remedies and bid goodbye to unpleasant yeast infections.
Eat Fermented Foods:
Fermented foods such as anything like sourdough, kombucha, yogurt, keifer, and sauerkraut are full of healthy probiotics (such as lactobacilli) that help to crowd out the yeast and keep it from growing out of control. I always try to eat as many of these foods as I can anyway, but especially so when I’m pregnant. I still have a jar of sourdough starter on my counter, and when I feel the mere tinglings of a yeast infection, or just as a preventative measure, I like to eat a small spoonful of the starter first thing in the morning (after a bit of food would probably be better, but I never remember that!). Recently, I had a friend make me some lacto-fermented sauerkraut, and I’ve been enjoying that as well.
When you’re trying to get rid of a yeast infection, it’s a balanced approach to killing the fungus and then crowding it out with good bacteria. Fermented foods are an excellent way to populate your vagina (along with your gastrointestinal tract) with good bacteria.
Take Care of Yourself:
If you’re like me, the first-trimester tiredness is just brutal, and as you enter the 2nd trimester, you might take for granted how good you feel and start to get a bit lax on the sleep. But by taking care of your body by first of all getting PLENTY of rest, your body’s immune system can work in its optimal state to help you fend off pathogens like candida. Next, it’s important to fill yourself with nutrient dense food and avoid processed commercial crap as much as you can. You are growing a human being, and you need to eat…and eat well! Don’t wait until you’re starving and eat an entire box of Oreos! Plan out those meals in advance (check out my favorite recipes here), and feed yourself…and your growing baby some good food!
Let Your Vagina Breathe:
Candida thrives in warm wet areas where there is no oxygen, and so to prevent candida from growing out of control, you want to let your vagina breathe. You can do this by wearing cotton panties like these, which are very comfortable while you’re pregnant anyways!
A big mistake I made while pregnant was wearing panty liners every day for any accidents (Watch yourself when you sneeze, you will pee a little bit!) and leakage, but I think this contributed to my yeast infection problem. A better option would have been something like this or just changing my underwear more often. You’ll also want to avoid wearing super tight skinny jeans and instead opt for something more comfortable like these. And of course, don’t sit around all day with a wet bathing suit on.
